It all started when…

George L. Chalmers was born May 12, 1919 to Wesley and Georgia Chalmers in Desoto County, MS.

Annie B. Smith was born March 11, 1920 to Eddie and Janie Smith, also in Desoto County, MS.

After months of pursuit by George, he and Annie married on Christmas Day, 1938. They made their first home as a married couple in Black Anchor, Mississippi, now known as Eudora. From their union 21 children were born, 16 of which survived childhood.

Early in their marriage, George found work as a sharecropper, while Annie found work as a housekeeper. When sharecropping opportunities became scarce, the couple relocated to Hernando, MS and eventually Nesbit, MS where they built their forever home.

Both George and Annie were crafty, using their skills to provide for their family in different ways. George worked in meat production and kept a garden most of his life that provided the family with cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and more. Annie was a skilled sewer and often recreated dresses she had seen in magazines. The couple was very active in the church, both singing in the choir at Dean Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Eudora, MS.

George eventually retired from the Chatting Chemical Company and after spent a lot of time hunting, bringing everything from chickens to deer home for Annie to prepare for the family.

George lost a battle with liver cancer in 1986, a couple of years after being diagnosed. The loss of the family’s patriarch was felt widely.

After becoming widowed, Annie spent most of her time devoted to her church, The Lord’s Tabernacle where she was active member until she was called home. George and Annie were the parents of 21, grandparents of 40+, great grandparents to over 60.

On June 12, 2021, Annie passed away peacefully at her home in Nesbit, MS, surrounded by family.
